Gel electrophoresis

Gel electrophoresis

Description

Gel electrophoresis is used as an efficient method to separate and analyze macromolecules and their fragments, based on their size and charge. It is used in clinical chemistry, biochemistry and molecular biology to separate a mixed population of DNA and RNA fragments by length, to estimate the size of DNA and RNA fragments or to separate proteins. Although mainly used as an analytical tool, gel electrophoresis may also be used to purify the mentioned biomolecules.
