Description
Infectious diseases are caused by pathogenic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, fungi or parasites. To be more specific, infection is not only a presence of these pathogens in a host organism, but also that organism’s reaction to these pathogens and the toxins that they produce. Treatment of infections consist of supportive care and administration of pathogen-specific drugs. Diagnostic work is performed using symptomatic diagnostics, microbial cultures, microscopy, biochemical tests and molecular diagnostics.
