A leading fodder producer in Europe pays undivided attention to their product quality. This responsibility falls on the company’s quality control laboratory, where physical, chemical and microbiologic research of the products is conducted.

Application of Equipment for Protein Quantification

In order to increase the effectiveness of the research, the quality control laboratory needed a solution, which:

  • would help reduce the duration of the analysis
  • would be as automatized as possible
  • would not require utilizing chemical reagents
  • would have uncomplicated operation and maintenance
  • would have data transfer and archiving software.

Application of Equipment for Protein Quantification

After analysing current protein quantification solutions in the market, a modified Duma method was chosen in combination with a Flash 4000 analyser by Thermo Fisher Scientific. Labochema representative installed the new equipment and carried out necessary training.

Long term equipment service agreement

The client organisation operates in chemistry industry. Their main product is nitrogen-phosphorus fertiliser, diammonium phosphate, which is obtained by neutralising the extracted phosphoric acid with ammonia. In order for the company to operate successfully, it is essential to immediately address any malfunctions in the lab machinery.

Long term equipment service agreement

There is a wide variety of equipment in the company’s laboratories, from simple dosing pumps to various analysers. The lab equipment is utilized in complex conditions. The equipment vibrations as well as chemical materials’ impact during any larger manufacturing process cause a more frequent than usual necessity for maintenance.

Long term equipment service agreement

The company was looking for a partner, which could provide the maintenance for their research equipment. They chose Labochema for ability to carry out various works on time and in high quality, including scheduled maintenance, precise repairs on mechanics, optics, synchronizing the machinery and more. Two organisations signed a service provider agreement, and Labochema became responsible for the fertilizer manufacturer’s equipment servicing. According to this agreement, the repairs take place either in the factory or in Labochema service centre.

Restoration Project: an X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer

A chemistry science institution used an x-ray photoelectron spectrometer Escalab 250 MK II, manufactured in 1985. This is a complicated deep vacuum system, dedicated to analysing the elemental composition across the top surface of the atom.

Restoration Project: an X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer

The system was not equiped with modern computer technologies for data recording, research automation and analysis. It was decided to modernise the existing system, however, the most complicated task was to match an almost 30 year old piece of equipment with current components and to ensure that the system operates efficiently after the modernisation has been completed.

Restoration Project: an X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer

Labochema worked together with the manufacturer and carried out a project, which included the following adjustments:

x-ray source and its power supply integration renewal of the closed cycle water cooling system for the x-ray source, including the cooling device replacing the elecronic block for electrons detection sensors, electrical signal transfer and signal recording installing a computer system with necessary software for system components’ management and data analysis installing and testing all these components and making final preparations for their efficient operation.

Restoration Project: an X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer

After performing the modernisation, the equipment was fitted with a modern control panel, which comes with the newest devices of this type. The users of this equipment are now able to carry out their research much quicker and easier. Long duration experiments no longer pose any issues.

Validation of Liquid Chromatography

The organisation develops and manufactures innovative pharmaceutical products. Liquid chromatography methods are used to inspect the raw materials and to examine the quality of the finished product.

Validation of Liquid Chromatography

Validation procedures must be performed in the professional environment, in presence of a certified engineer, representing the machine’s manufacturer, as well as an operator, and a quality control inspector. Therefore, a machine for such task cannot be sent to the manufacturer. Validation procedures stretch out in time, and, when one of them is not up to the standard, the remaining ones need to wait. Then, the maintenance of the machine must be carried out, necessary parts ordered, validation procedures repeated, and the company faces huge losses for idle time.

Validation of Liquid Chromatography

The company approached Labochema looking for qualified engineers and seeking to safeguard the validation process. Labochema engineers were trained and certified by the manufacturers, therefore, the maintenance works are performed well and the validation procedures are finalised effectively. Suspending the operation is avoided by manufacturer-recommended maintenance works, which are performed before the validation procedures begin. This includes oiling the friction-affected joints, repairing or replacing any worn out parts, calibrating the sensors etc.

Validation of Liquid Chromatography

A schedule for maintenance works together with a list for the required spare parts was instituted in order to ensure on-going operation. There is no more waiting until the replacement parts arrive. Since starting their cooperation with Labochema, the company has not once had to suspend their manufacturing process because of discrepancies of the machinery validation.

F.A.Q.

Equipment care

  • Can the pH electrode be kept in the distilled water in between the measurings?

Yes, the time intervals between the measurings aren't long. The longer the electrode stays in distiller water, the faster it ages. If you are not working with the electrode for longer than an hour, our recommendation is to keep it in the solution specified by the manufacturer.

  • What should we do if the power goes out often in our lab?

We recommend purchasing a constant current source. LABOCHEMA's equipment servicing department can help with choosing the right one for your needs.

  • We use Kern scales with printers in the manufacturing process. Currently, we have an issue with all printers printing different dates and times. A precise date and time is essential to us. How can this be solved?

In this case, the printers have to be reprogrammed. This can be done by bringing them to our lab or to LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department.

  • There is an issue with our tissue processor Leica ASP200. The instrument’s display says, “The active carbon filter must be changed.” What exactly do we need to do?

This note means that the carbon filter is past its expiration date and must be replaced. This can be done by the specialists from LABOCHEMA's equipment servicing department.

  • After turning on the gas analyser QRAE PGM2000, it immediately signals and shows a too high methane concentration on the screen. The instrument was turned on in a clean environment where there is no methane gas (it has been checked with other gas analysers). What are the possible reasons for this?

First, you have to activate fresh air calibration. See the user's manual for more information on how to do this. If the fresh air calibration has not helped, the issue might lie in failure of the methane sensor or the instrument itself. To determine the accurate reason for the failure, please deliver the instrument to LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department.

  • The distiller output has decreased. What are the possible reasons for this?

Check the water access to the instrument, whether the water pressure is adequate. Outgoing cooling water must be around 70 °C. Make sure that any deposit in the distiller has been cleaned. If you have gone through these steps, but the distiller is still not working - please arrange a visit by a LABOCHEMA technical servicing specialist.

  • A piece of equipment has broken down. What should we do?

You could arrange the LABOCHEMA equipment servicing engineer visit at the location of the instrument, or alternatively deliver the instrument to our equipment servicing department for detailed inspection and repairs.

Calibration

  • I cannot calibrate the conductivity meter

Check the expiry dates on solutions used for calibration. Make sure your solutions have not been contaminated. Check if the right electrode is being used and the cell constant is correct. If you are still unable to calibrate the instrument, please contact the LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department.

  • I cannot calibrate the oximeter

Check if the oximeter probe sponge is wet. Check the membrane of the probe (a yellow spot must be visible through it). The membrane should not have turned white - if it is white, replace it. Take the membrane off and check the electrode (anode  / cathode must not have any deposit on them). After the electrode has been cleaned, you can try calibrating again in 24 hours. If you are still unable to calibrate the oximeter, please contact the LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department.

  • I cannot calibrate the pH meter

Check the expiry date on the solutions used for calibration. If it has not yet gone by, but the calibration still isn't working, please bring your instrument to the LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department for a detailed inspection.

Before bringing in a piece of equipment

  • Is it necessary to clean the broken instrument before bringing it in for servicing?

Yes, cleaning it is necessary. It is also essential to fill out the decontamination act and attach it to the instrument you are delivering.

  • What should we do when a piece of equipment has broken down?

Immediately contact the equipment servicing department and refrain from trying to remove the reason of the failure internally. Any attempt to work with a broken instrument might increase the expenses for its maintenance.

  • Do we have to bring in the fully assembled instrument when bringing it in for repairs?

Yes, a full assembly is essential, except for the instances when it has been agreed differently with our equipment servicing specialists.

Equipment servicing at LABOCHEMA

  • A piece of equipment with warranty has broken down. What should we do?

According to regular rules of warranty service, the equipment has to be delivered to LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department, in its original packaging if at all possible. It is important to have the warranty card and / or a copy of the VAT invoice and a written description of the failure. If the equipment in question is impossible or very complicated to deliver, please contact the LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department.

  • Is it possible to sign an agreement for equipment servicing and repairs? How can this be done?

Long-term equipment maintenance (technical servicing, preventative servicing and repairs) can be carried out by LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department upon request. Please contact us to find out more.

  • Could it happen that it will be cheaper to purchase a new piece of equipment than to get it repaired at your servicing department?

If LABOCHEMA equipment servicing department specialists were to inspect an instrument and decide that the price of the repairs can be close to half the price for a new piece of equipment or more, they will inform you about this matter before continuing the repair.

  • How long do repairs of the equipment delivered for servicing at LABOCHEMA take?

Depending on the nature of the failure, usual equipment servicing takes 1 to 5 days. At times, if the repair requires ordering parts from the manufacturer, it might take about 4 weeks.
